United Nations invited artists and art & culture organizations to have conversations about reimagining the world post Covid-19

BACKGROUND

In honor of their 75th anniversary, the United Nations launched a global dialogue initiative in 2020 called UN75: ‘The Future is Unwritten’ to address and plan for the sustainable development of today’s pressing challenges–from the climate crisis to inequalities, new forms of violence, and rapid changes in technology and population. Artist Literacies Institute and The Future is Unwritten have partnered to help make sense of these conversations taking place globally amongst arts and culture institutions and artists to develop insightful and action oriented reports.

RESULTS

I worked with Andrew Frieband to analyze and code qualitative data from the conversations that took place, conduct research about the issues addressed and design report summaries, which were then sent to the UN.

SYNTHESIZING THE CONVERSATIONS

Making sense of the conversations began with  actively listening to the recordings, building context of the issue and making notes.

Using the technique of color-coding, I marked out dialogues with similar themes & made notes.

After listening to hours of conversations, I identified that the participants were addressing three categories

1.

Roles & Responsibilities of Artists and Artist Orgs

2.

Questions or Concerns & obstacles to creating change

3.

Possible solutions, suggestions and action steps

Putting on a lens of analysis, I looked for key themes and

patterns in the participants comments and responses to gauge

the core message they were trying to convey.

This step required my intuition as a researcher, my experience and knowledge
in the area of topic discussed and my skills of synthesis.

Making multiple passes of analysis for each category.

Synthesizing the data,

Making connections.

In order to make sense of all this data, I wanted to find out if the three categories were related in any way. Did the participants have the answers to the questions they were asking? Did they address the agenda of the meeting? Did they propose steps to take in the future?

Summarizing with Actionable steps

Now that the content of the conversation was clear, I began putting actionable items together - ones that were proposed or spoken about in the meeting or ones that I added after synthesizing meaning out of what they were trying to convey. I categorized them specific to the target audience.

DESIGNING THE FINAL REPORT

Finally, it was time to collate this data into a summary report for the UN to understand the participants needs, concerns and demands.
