Disabled people have been grossly misrepresented in Indian hindi cinema.

BACKGROUND

Films are an integral part of our society and hold the power to influence the way people see each other. From our year-long research on the discrimination against disabled people, one point that consistently came up was that most disabled people find their representations in Indian films to be unrelatable, often stereotyped and objectified. This has not only caused great distress and frustration to the community, but has also wrongly contributed to the social stigma and shame around disability.

RESULTS

After engaging with Indian disability communities for a year and learning from their stories, we designed an experiential learning program called THE CROSSOVER that equips non-disabled film students to identify ableism and learn how to write authentic stories about disability. The program pilot was run at MIT Institute of Design's film & video department.
